Ⅱ.Natural Geography (environment and resources)

-The city of Suwałki is located in the north-eastern part of Poland, near the border with Lithuania, the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation and Belarus. Suwałki is the second largest city in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. Transport routes run through the city - from Berlin via Warsaw to St. Petersburg and from Warsaw to Helsinki (the Via Baltica high-speed transit road and the Rail Baltica railway line connecting the Baltic States with Western Europe).

-Suwałki is located on the international road towards Lithuania called " Via Baltica ", via Budzisko. The city bypasses the built bypass along the expressway No. 61 and at the end of the national road No. 8 . They have road connections with all the surrounding towns. There is a bus station in the city . The means of public transport are mainly buses of the Municipal Transport Authority (ZKM) and taxis .

-The bypass is part of the Via Baltica international route under construction. There were many protests aimed at accelerating the construction of the Suwałki bypass. After more than 30 years of applying, its construction began in early 2017, and it was officially opened on April 13, 2019. The road was built as an expressway standard with a concrete surface with a permissible load of 115 kN / axle.

-Bus transport in and around Suwałki is provided by PKS w Suwałki SA . The city has direct bus connections with Poznań, Wrocław, Warsaw, Białystok, Olsztyn, Gdańsk, Ełk, Kraków, Lublin, Łomża, Giżycko, Olecko, Augustów, Gołdap, Grajewo, Sejny and others. The private carrier Kari-Bus also provides services to Warsaw and Białystok. In Suwałki you can also meet PKS Białystok, PKS Łomża, PKS Warszawa, PKS Olsztyn, PKS Gdańsk, PKS Mrągowo, PKS Pisz buses and Veolia Kętrzyn companies.

-Railway lines from Sokółka , Olecko and Kaunas intersect in the city . There is a historic railway station from the tsarist times in the city. The international railway line Rail Baltica will run through the station. A train to Kaunas leaves from Suwałki on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, where you can change to a train to Vilnius . It returns on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. There is also a train leaving once a day to Kraków via Białystok and Warsaw. A rail bus (colloquially known as a rail bus) departs four times a day to Białystok . Moreover, a direct train to West Warsaw runs once a day. It is planned to restore the courses to Ełk via Olecko.

-There is an airport in Suwałki with an area of 110 ha, used for sports purposes by the Suwałki Aviation School, as well as by the Air Rescue Service. On the basis of the existing grass airfield, it is planned to build a local airport with a 1320 m long concrete runway, adapted to the needs of air transport.

-In 2014, at ul. Szpitalna a sanitary helipad was commissioned.

 

Ⅲ.Economy

-Suwałki is a city situated in Podlaskie Province, north-eastern Poland, on the river Czarna Hańcza, in the proximity of the borders with Lithuania, Russia and Belarus. Suwałki is a city with district rights, the seat of the rural district and commune. The city covers the area of 65.5 km2 and is inhabited by ca. 70 thousand people. It is the second, after Białystok, largest city of the Podlaskie Province.

-The activities of the local authorities are focused on the economic development of the city.

-The Technology Incubator consists of the reception hall and different sized office rooms that can be utilized as spaces for companies at different stages of their development. It offers for entrepreneurs convenient conference rooms and full social infrastructure.

-The Park directs its offer, first of all, to enterprises connected with advanced technologies.

-Suwałki Special Economic Zone (SSEZ) is one of the fastest developing economic areas in Poland with one of the best infrastructures in the country.

-Suwałki is the center of the wood, building materials and food industries. After a difficult period of transformation and the loss of the status of a voivodeship city, the socio-economic situation of Suwałki has stabilized. -Most service points are located along Kościuszki, Noniewicza and Pasaż Grande-Synthe streets. There are two marketplaces in the city: at ul. 1 Maja and at ul. Bakałarzewska. The first large-area store in Suwałki was TIP, transformed into Biedronka , which is still operating today . In the 90s, the most famous 24/7 shop "Eden" was also opened. In the city center there are small shopping centers: DH Wigry, Pasaż Handlowy Arkadia and DH Alfa, Lidl , as well as the largest shopping center in the area - Suwałki Plaza . Other larger shopping centers are, for example, Obi , Kaufland , and Tesco .

-2. A storage reservoir is being built at Krakowska Street

-Przedsiębiorstwo Wodociągów i Kanalizacji is already constructing a retention reservoir to prevent flooding of buildings located in the southern part of the city during heavy rains. The building should be ready at the end of October this year.

Ⅴ.Attrations and Cityscape

-Suwałki is surrounded by attractive features of the natural world – nature reservations, monuments of nature, lakes, parks, rivers and forests, including three primeval forests (Augustów, Romincka and Borecka Forests). The most remarkable of those are:

-Suwałki Landscape Park covering the area of over 6 284 ha, created in 1976, includes the deepest in Poland Lake Hańcza (108,5 m), exceptionally charming are lakes Jaczno and Jeglówek, with numerous hills (reaching 300m above sea level) – with the characteristic Cisowa (Yew) Mountain, the highest in the Suwałki region Rowelska Mountain (298m above sea level) and the famous “hanging valleys”, Turturl eskers and the boulder fields of “Bachanowo” and “Rutka”. The scenery of the Suwałki Landscape Park features in the films: “Pan Tadeusz” by Andrzej Wajda in “The Issa Valley” by Tadeusz Konwicki.

-The Wigry National Park covering the area of 15 085,5 ha, established in 1989, with the aim of preservation of the precious natural and scenic features of the area of Lake Wigry – is one of the biggest and most beautiful national parks in Poland. For its unique features of the protected fauna and flora it has been listed by Ramsar Convention (listing the most precious wetlands) and “Aqua” project listing the most precious aquatic eco-systems in the world.

-Major historic monuments in the neighbourhood of Suwałki:

-Camaldolese Monastery was begun in 1671. Unfortunately, the church was destroyed twice – during the wars in 1915 and in 1944 . After the last war the temple was rebuilt and the former Camaldolese monastery reconstructed. Of all the present buildings original are: the building of the refectory and one of the corner hermitages. The post-monastic complex is the abode the Residential Arts Centre, an institution managed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

-Augustów Canal – a priceless, unique on the European scale, work of water engineering from the first half of the 19th century. It bears witness to the high technical and construction skills of the builders: Polish military and civilian engineers. The Augustów Canal is connected with the Baltic through the Niemen River. The author of the design and the master workman of the first stage of its construction was Lieutenant-Colonel Ignacy Prądzyński, who later in the rank of general participated in the November Uprising (1831).

-Stańczyki Viaducts – one of highest in Poland. They are 200m long and 36m high. They were constructed of reinforced concrete, with five bays of equal 15m arches. The northern bridge was erected in 1912-1914, the southern in 1923-1926. The structure has perfect proportions; its pillars are modelled after the Roman aqueducts in Pont du Gard.

-Dowspuda – the remains of the Neo-gothic palace of the Count Ludwik Michał Pac, an economic reformer from the first half of the 19th century, great patriot and art lover. (his mementoes also in the neighbouring Raczki).

-Sejny (Renaissance-Baroque post-Dominican complex; Lithuanian consulate) and its surroundings with old manor-houses (among others Krasnogruda connected with Czesław Miłosz) and numerous examples of the traditional country architecture.

-Puńsk – the capital of the Polish Lithuanians with an ethnographic museum, skansen museum and still alive traditions of folk art and folk Lithuanian cuisine.

 

Ⅵ.History and Culture

-The town arose from a settlement established in the 17th century by the Camaldolese Order from the nearby monastery in Wigry, as one of the settlements in the depopulated areas of the former Jaćwieża, which they colonized . On March 3, 1720, with the royal privilege, August II the Strong confirmed the municipal rights of Suwałki.

-The most important events in the history of Suwałki:

-1688 - the first mention of Suwałki;

-1710 - the Camaldolese monks obtained permission from King August II to hold markets and fairs in Suwałki;

-1715 - Suwałki was proclaimed a city by the Camaldolese monks;

-1795 - as a result of the Third Partition of Poland, the city was incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia ;

-1807 - Suwałki was incorporated into the Duchy of Warsaw ;

-1816 - the Augustów voivodeship with its seat in Suwałki was created;

-1826 - the city's regulatory plan was approved, which determined the directions and nature of its buildings for nearly 100 years;

-1827 - population - 3,753;

-1842 - the poet Maria Konopnicka was born in Suwałki ;

-1849 - the painter Alfred Kowalski-Wierusz was born in Suwałki ;

-1866 - Suwałki becomes the capital of the Suwałki Governorate ;

-Railway station in 1917

-1872 - the number of inhabitants - 19 899, Suwałki is the fourth most populous city in the Kingdom of Poland ;

-1882 - Aleksandra née Szczerbiński was born in Suwałki , the second wife of Marshal Józef Piłsudski;

-1915 - Edward Szczepanik , the last Polish prime minister in exile, was born in Suwałki ;

-1919 - On August 24, the Polish army entered Suwałki - Suwałki within the borders of the Republic of Poland;

-1926 - director Andrzej Wajda was born in Suwałki ;

-1938 - the 41st Suwałki Infantry Regiment was stationed in Suwałki . Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego, 1st Division of the 29th Light Artillery Regiment, Suwałki Cavalry Brigade , 2nd Regiment of Grochowski Lancers gen. Dwernicki Joseph , 3 regiment Szwoleżerów Mazowieckich them. Col. Jan Kozietulski, 4th Horse Artillery Squadron and 11th Communications Squadron of the SBK;

-1939 - on September 24, the Red Army entered Suwałki (that day it also took Sejny and Augustów )

-1939 - On September 28, Germany and the USSR signed a pact on friendship and borders, according to which Suwałki and the northern part of the Augustów Primeval Forest fell to the Germans

-1939 - On October 6  Wehrmacht troops entered Suwałki

-1940 - Suwałki was incorporated into the German Reich under the new name of Sudauen . The Germans carried out mass arrests of the local intelligentsia;

-1940 - deportation of the large Jewish population of the city to the larger ghettos and extermination camps in Sobibór and Treblinka;

-1941 - the Germans established Stalag IF Sudauen , in which tens of thousands of prisoners of war, mainly Russian, were killed;

-1944 - on October 23, German troops withdrew from Suwałki, the troops of the 3rd Belorussian Front entered the city ;

-1945 - Suwałki is the seat of the district ;

-1975 - Suwałki the capital of the voivodeship ;

-1999 - as a result of the administrative reform, Suwałki lost the status of a voivodeship city , becoming a city with poviat rights in Podlaskie Voivodeship.

-Culture

-Most of the cultural events in Suwałki are organized by the Suwałki Cultural Center (established after the merger of the Regional Center for Culture and Art and the Youth Cultural Center). Interesting works in the field of painting and photography are presented by Chłodna 20, PAcamera and the Center for Contemporary Art - Andrzej Strumiłło Gallery. The PaCamera Club photographic group operated at the Suwałki Cultural Center (formerly ROKiS). The days of Suwałki are celebrated on August 10-11. The city is the organizer - in the biennale system - of the International Festival of Folk Dance Ensembles "Źródliska". Cyclical cultural events are: the International Festival of Children's and Youth Theaters Wigraszek, Źródliska , Aukso Summer Philharmonic, Teatr- Akcje, Suwałki Folklore Fair, Suwałki Shanty Marathon, Suwałki Blues Festival and the International Music Festival "Ars Musica" in Suwałki. In the city there is the District Museum in Suwałki and the Maria Konopnicka Museum in Suwałki , located in the poet's family house. "Dwutygodnik Suwalski" is published.
