V.Attractions

1. The church of Campin

 5.png

Included in a hamlet, this church topped by a rectangular 14th century bell tower with a flat top has only a 12th century nave extended by a choir.

The entrance to the latter, in a broken triumphal arch, presents a series of monster heads. The entrance gate consists of a semicircular arch with 4 arches.

Of the furniture of the church there is no trace of Roman medals and sarcophagi mentioned in a book and which would have been unearthed on the site in 1881.

2.Notre Dame de Sadirac church

 6.png

Built on a clay hill dominating a wide landscape, this modest church with a rectangular plan is the seat of an archpriest in the 18th century.

The dating of the various elements is difficult to reconstruct. Construction may have been undertaken during the first Romanesque period of the 11th century. The bell tower-wall was added in the 12th century, the openings were altered in the 16th century and the entrance door in a basket handle dates from the 18th century.

The baptisimal font, from the 16th century, has an octagonal stone tank.

3.Saint-Jean Baptiste d'Auzac church

 7.png

The building, of which only vestiges remain, was built in the Lysos valley at the end of the 12th century or at the beginning of the 13th century. Concerning the bell-wall, it dates from the 14th century but will be improved in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Abandoned in the years 1920-1930, the church is deprived of its capitals ceded to the city of Bordeaux then classified as a historical monument on May 30, 1961.

The bells are transported to the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Grignols. One of them bears the inscription "St. John the Baptist, pray for us".

4.The Saint-Michel statue

 8.png

In 1820, the second son of Charles X, the Duke of Berry, was assassinated by L.P. Louvel, a Bonapartist who wanted to put an end to the Bourbon race. The Duke of Berry died childless, but a posthumous son, the Duke of Bordeaux, was born on September 29 of the same year, St. Michael's Day.

A year later this statue was inaugurated, commissioned by Viscount Élie de Pons St. Maurice, lord of Grignols, in honor of this child. Henri V de Bourbon, Duke of Bordeaux and Count of Chambord, and pretender to the throne of France.

However, in 1873, by his refusal of the tricolor flag, he threw down the Restoration attempt carried out for his benefit by his supporters.

VI.History

During the Revolution, the parishes of Saint-Pierre de Flaujac (known as Grignols), Saint-Martin de Gleyroux (or Glairoux) and its annex, Saint-Michel de Campin, Saint-Jean d'Auzac and its annex, Saint-André de Lacouture , Saint-Christophe de Romestaing, Notre-Dame de Sadirac and its annex, Saint-Sylvestre, Saint-Martin de Monclaris, Saint-Jean du Mazerol form the municipality of Grignols. In 1851, the commune of Grignols was dismembered from its section of Glairoux to form part of the commune of Sigalens...

A family bears the name of Grignols, since the 13th century at least. The Lord of Grignols is mentioned in a tithe transaction with the Commandeur de Cours, in 1273, and Arnaldus de Granbolio is mentioned in 1312 in a will of Clement V.

The GRIGNOLS succeeded each other at the head of the seigneury for three centuries. Among them are Jean de Grignols, allied with Sire d'Albret in 1383, Noble Jean, Captain of Aillas in 1465, and Jean, knight, ordinary gentleman of the King's Chamber who served with distinction in the armies of François 1st, in Italy.

By two successive sales, La Seigneurie passed, in 1597, to Jean Pol d'Esparbés de Lussan, Governor of Blaye.

His daughter Antoinette, lady of honor to Marie de Médécis, married Jean de Grignols who, through an exchange of land, found the barony erected as a marquisate in 1613 by Louis XIII.

The Bourg de Grignols was born at this time, taking on more importance than that of Flaujac, built around the primitive church. Parish church until 1862.

It was then that the town was built. First in the extension of the alley of the castle, starting from a fairground then in the direction of the Halle and an inn to join the passage BAZAS - CASTELJALOUX.

The King authorizes two annual fairs. One on January 17, the other on November 25, as well as a weekly market on Wednesdays, still relevant today. The children of Jean de Grignols having no descendants, the seigneury was bought in 1753 by Charles-Philippe, Count of Pons-Saint-Maurice, whose family remained the owner until 1946.

In 1790, during the formation of the communes, Grignols was only a commercial village placed under the dependence of the Castle and belonging to the parish of Flaujac. It is however set up in commune and canton. But, from the beginning of the XIXth century and until the 1950s, all the houses and properties of the Château were sold one after the other.

However, in the 19th century, Grignols was a prosperous municipal center. The rich agricultural hillsides produce wine and cereals in abundance, but also a significant proportion of tobacco. Sawmills, tile factories and the straw factory (bottle packaging) are the source of intense economic activity.

At the end of the twentieth century, only a sawmill-parquet floor remained and a few farms devoted themselves to developing local products such as wines and capons (hence a major event at the Grignols market on the last Sunday before Christmas) , fatty ducks and farmhouse cheeses. Fortunately, Commerce and Handicrafts are maintained there.
