V.Attractions

1. Gressier beach

 4.png

The Gressier beach has a large car park under forest cover with a capacity of 3,100 spaces (corresponding to approximately 2.8 people per car in high season, i.e. 8,680 beach attendants) which stretches over 4 km along the beach. the back dune. The Gressier beach is the only one supervised by the town. Two “wild” beaches are present in the municipal area: “La Cantine” to the north and “Jenny” to the south, next to the naturist one.

2.The Jenny

 5.png

The naturist residential estate of La Jenny (de) created in 1983 occupies a 127 ha pine forest. This area is only made up of chalets. It offers an accommodation capacity of 2,265 people. The ocean beach, supervised for naturists, is only a few hundred meters away. It has a naturist golf course, unique in the world, with a six-hole course, and a covered and uncovered practice.

Saint-Seurin church

The Saint-Seurin church was built in 1892 to replace the old church (itself rebuilt in 1662) which was initially located at a place called Gleyze-Vieille 5 km from the village towards the ocean and was a stop on the coastal path going to Compostela.

On the Place Saint-Seurin, near the church, there is a plane tree planted at the end of the 19th century, the age of which is estimated at around 130 years (2003). In 2003, it received the remarkable tree label of France by the association A.R.B.R.E.S.

VI.History

The "door" of the Pays de Buch

In Gallo-Roman times, the people of Bogio settled in the land of Buch. Access to this territory (when you come from the current Medoc) is called: "Porticus de Bogio", or the "Door" or "Porch" of the country of Buch in Latin. Le Porge takes its name from this door!

At the same time, the "Levade" or Roman road, passed through Le Temple in the North-South axis, which suggests that the region was inhabited.

Le Porge and its neighborhoods

The moon-shaped village has developed along a north-south axis, between the dune, rivers and a drained marshy area. Even today, four localities border this arc:

"Lauros" is the southernmost district of the town, on the edge of the dunes from which its name comes.

"Laruau" developed along the road leading to the center of the village further north. The "Vignas" housed a vineyard.

“Lescarran” is the district heading towards Lacanau.

Le Porge and its forest

Between the Porgeais and the forest, it's a great story ... of family!

Until the 17th century, the population lived in virtual autarky on small-scale agriculture and animal husbandry.

On May 31, 1864, the Canal des Etangs was inaugurated: dug by hand to dry out the swamps, it started from Lake Hourtin and joined the Lacanau lake, the water of which was discharged into the Arcachon Basin. This construction, 8 km of which passes through the Porge, made it possible to form short heathlands. They are first used as a cattle yard before being sown. On these lands, the sale of pine trees followed by tapping (harvesting resin) enabled the municipality to make long-term profits. But the competition is raging and, in 1986, the tapping is definitively abandoned.

Today, Porge is a seaside resort, but the forest, omnipresent in the town, remains an essential natural space for ecological balance. Moreover, even if pine cultivation is no longer the main activity of the village, development prospects are emerging with the relaunch of sustainable tapping.

In the XIXth and XXth centuries: major projects

At the time of the prosperity acquired thanks to the sale of pines and the industrial exploitation of gemstones, the Porge launched major projects: the Saint Seurin church was built in 1892, the schools in 1908, and the town hall in 1910.

The commune of Porge used to be called “Le Porge en Buch”, which in Latin was called Porticus de Bogio.

Porticus means “door” or “porch”, and Bogio relates to the people who settled in the Land of Buch in the Gallo-Roman era: the Boiates, whose name will give Buch. Le Porge was therefore “the gateway to the Pays de Buch” when one came from the Médoc.

The sands have swallowed up the first church located on the edge of the marshes at the explicit place of Gleyze-Vieille to the west of the current town.

Le Porge is a stage of the Soulac route, a pilgrimage route to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, also called the English Way.

On July 18, 1989, during a summer of heatwave and drought, a fire broke out at a place called “Mistre”, between Le Porge and Lacanau. Fanned by a wind blowing at 25 kilometers per hour, the fire spread in Le Porge, after having jumped a firewall 50 meters. On the 19th, several fireplaces rekindled, the fire headed towards the ocean and reached the communal campsite of "La Grigne", which the firefighters had to evacuate (2,800 summer visitors), as well as the beach of Gressier (12,000 people). , then the naturist village of "La Jenny". Fortunately, there are no human casualties, but the flames devastated 3,800 hectares of pine trees.

VII.Other information

The overhaul of the beach plan

The "Beach Plan" is a historic action program. Launched at the end of the 1960s under the leadership of the Interministerial Mission for the Planning of the Aquitaine Coast (MIACA), its purpose was to reconcile the preservation of natural environments with a secure and channeled reception of the influx of the public around the beaches.

This communal action, essential from an environmental point of view, was carried out in partnership with the State (ONF), the Region and the Department.

Since then, coastal protection has been stepped up and the issues surrounding the use of the beach have increased. The “Beach Plan” is therefore in the process of being redefined within the framework of a partnership between the GIP Littoral Aquitain, a public interest group which brings together the State services and the territorial communities of the Aquitaine coast, the ONF , the Community of Commune and the commune. The new version of the "Beach Plan" should make it possible to coordinate all the development projects for Aquitaine beaches, by applying common principles, but taking into account local specificities.

Le Porge will participate in an investment program of 1 million euros, 80% funded by Europe, the State, the Region, the Department and the ONF to carry out innovative action and ensure better management of the site.

The details of this action plan are scheduled for 2018, when work will kick off.The regional strategy proposes an action plan, in the form of prescriptions and recommendations to be implemented and promoted for each type of site, and according to different issues. Here are the objectives of the Plan-Plages (source site of GIP LA):

Ensure the security of sites and the protection of people,

Ensure the environmental management of the site (example of actions: experimentation with selective sorting and awareness-raising on eco-actions, experimentation with sites without garbage cans, etc.),

Improve the quality of reception for the public / disabled public,

Guarantee the preservation of the natural spaces and the landscape characteristics of the site (examples of actions: Landscape project using plants adapted to the local context and maintaining the typicality of the places, removable equipment, etc.),

Develop and encourage environmentally friendly modes of transport and put in place alternative solutions to the car and control flows (examples of actions: creation of recessed facilities under forest cover, promoting cycle or pedestrian connections, setting up of shuttles within the framework of arrangements associating public and private.

Management of sports and educational activities and activities.

The municipality of Le Porge developed and approved in January 2017, a demanding PLU to guarantee the richness and specificity of its territory, while ensuring its harmonious deployment.

The planning authorization instruction service is shared between the 10 municipalities of the Community of Medullian municipalities to strengthen the level of service offered to residents (expertise, deadlines, etc.) and promote a shared vision of the application of the rules. of town planning on the territory.

A second generation Agenda 21 for Le Porge

Cornerstone of municipal environmental policy, the Agenda 21 initiative was launched in the municipality for nearly 10 years with the development of a diagnostic in 2008.

The municipality's first Agenda 21 was labeled “Local Agenda 21 France” in 2012.

Validated for 5 years, this roadmap dedicated to Sustainable Development was broken down into 50 action sheets for the next 15 years. Since 2012, the municipality has devoted itself to the implementation of this program of actions, the deadline of which was set for December 2016 and the majority of the initiatives of which are successful.

The Municipality therefore embarked on the development of its 2nd generation Agenda in March 2016, always in conjunction with its partners (institutions, think tanks, local actors, etc.).

This new plan provides for around 40 actions, including:

the fight against food waste in school canteens

improving the quality of indoor air in municipal buildings

preservation of ecological corridors

protection of pollinating insects

the creation of a trash drive at the beach

the establishment of an economic and social observatory etc ...

This second generation Agenda 21 was unanimously approved by City Council on November 8, 2017.

Le Porge Town Hall invites you to discover it HERE.

The 5 pillars of Agenda 21:

Preserve natural resources and biodiversity

Work to stop climate runaway

Make production and consumption patterns more responsible

Guarantee social cohesion between territories and generations

Entering a more equitable and democratic society

What is an Agenda 21?

The history of Agenda 21 begins in 1992 at the first Earth Summit in Rio, when 173 governments decided to set the lines of progress that humanity should adopt in the 21st century to ensure its economic and social development in a protected environment. . At the local level, Agenda 21 du Porge presents the municipality's sustainable development project.

It describes a set of concrete actions that the community wants to implement to build a harmonious municipality, which combines economic growth, preservation of the environment and well-being of residents.
