IV.Industrial Characterisitics

Regional industries: French Riviera is located in the South-East of France, Côte d'Azur covers part of the Bouches du Rhone, the Var department, the Maritimes Alps and the Principality of Monaco. Its geographical position gives it the advantage of a Mediterranean climate, soft and sunny. Moreover, Cote d'Azur benefits from a wide range of landscapes: the charm of its sunny beaches, the Calanques of the Provences coastline, which offer a protected and idyllic panorama, but also landscapes made up of valleys dedicated to the agriculture and vines. All these elements make the Cote d'Azur a place highly appreciated by foreign investors. The activities developed by tourism and economics activities allow prestigious real estate, hotels, restaurants and ultra-luxurious shops to continue their development.

Tourism: Tourism is the main resource of the Eze. This all year round, exclusive holiday destination is visited by those who appreciate this most precious and rare of jewels with its spectacular hilltop setting, affording a panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea. The village will enthrall you with its elegant, old architecture, capturing many styles and influences within the ancient walls, which have seen 2,000 years of colorful history go by. Besides, you will find the same luxuriously laid back, peaceful ambiance on the coast at Eze-Bord-de-Mer, with its private beaches and a spectacular historical hotel with its elegant old world style.

Perfume industry: The perfume industry on the French Riviera dates from the 18th century, when Grasse, an inland town in the western part of the Alpes-Maritimes, became known as the perfume capital of the world. This was due to the splendid micro-climate that encouraged the culture of the flowers and aromatic plants like lavender and jasmine, among others, enabling the creation of top quality perfumes. Nowadays, the industry is still thriving, and is a great draw for visitors to the Riviera. In Eze, you can visit Perfume Factory and Historical Museum in Eze-Village, which is one of oldest perfumeries in France. Here, you will see the laboratory where our in-house Perfumer “NOSE” creates our newest Fragrances. Here you will enjoy some entertaining and factual stories about the skills and discoveries behind the creative process, and the artistry of the “Nose” is revealed. V.Attractions

1.Eze botanical garden (Jardin botanique d'Èze)

 4.png

Location: The Exotic Garden of Eze is located on the site of a medieval fortress, perched 429 metres above the Mediterranean Sea. The panorama from the garden offers one of the most spectacular views of the French Riviera extending all the way to the Esterel Mountains and the Golf of Saint Tropez.

History: After the Second World War dozens of men carry large bags of soil and plants on their backs up to the ruins of the castle and its sparse remaining walls. This is where André Gianton, the Maire of the time with the help of Jean Gastaud, father of the Exotic Garden in Monaco, decided to create an exotic garden. The site is well protected from the north winds by the Revère Plateau and the declivity of the rocky outcrop ensures good drainage. In other words, it was a perfect site for planting succulents such as cactus, agave and aloes. On the photos dating back to that time one sees the ground dotted with young cacti and euphorbes, some still in their pots. The undertaking was a real challenge as well as something of a punt on the future but the success was such that a second phase of the garden soon followed.

Plant species: The garden comprises various species from different climate zones divided into 2 main sections. On the South side there are plants from desert regions whereas the shadier and wetter North side is planted with Mediterranean species. Using flash codes the visitors can widen their knowledge about the species present. Sun lovers can lay on the deck chairs to soak up the sun whilst admiring the view. Art-lovers can admire the statues by Jean-Philippe Richard which are dotted throughout the garden adding a touch of charm and poetry to this magical place.

Awards: Eze’s Exotic Garden has received 2 awards; the “Prix Spécial Régional du Fleurissement” and the label “Jardin Remarquable”.

2.Nietzsche path

 5.png

The beginning of the path down is well-marked, just below the entrance to ancient village. The other option is to climb up from Eze Sur Mer. I prefer walking down. Winding down the corniche and through a forested ravine, the quiet trail lends itself naturally to contemplation. Birds chirp. Leaves rustle when gentle breezes make brief, welcome appearances The gravel path crunches below your feet as the brightest yellow butterflies flutter along. The sea washes the shore below, beyond the scent of pines and the many varieties of fragrant shrubs and plants that naturally fill these spaces. The clean, fresh air offers its own special brand of aromatherapy.

The path isn’t difficult but it’s not easy either. There are places where stairs have been built by France’s impressive sentier (walking trail) maintenance crews or possibly by local groups who take a keen interest in maintaining their trails. However there are also a few steep pitches and some spots where the stones or gravel are a bit loose and slippery if one isn’t careful. Faites attention!

It’s a quicker climb down than up, needless to say, and in 90 minutes, after brief stops to admire the changing views, you are back in Eze Bord de Mer.  Cool your feet in the Med and enjoy a refreshing brew on the beach before taking the train home.

As an alternative to driving, take the coastal train to Eze Bord De Mer and the #83 bus (which only comes by once an hour) to Eze Village. Be well armed with heavy-duty sun block, hats, and mist-spray water bottles (LOVE these!) as well as drinking bottles.

Wear good walking footwear and take the path down. You’ll be very glad you did. The suggested advice when the going gets strenuous on the Nietzsche Trail?  Try repeating Zarathustra’s mantra from his own sojourn through the mountains: “You are treading your path of greatness: no one shall steal after you here.”

Sitting just below Èze, this fort is the perfect place to revel in 360-degree views. Èze - Fort de la Revère is a 2.7 mile loop trail located near Èze, that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and nature trips and is best used from March until December. An orientation table helps you get your bearings. The fort was built in 1870 to protect Nice (it served as an allied prisoner camp during WWII). There are picnic tables under the trees for an al fresco lunch and dozens of trails in the surrounding Parc Naturel Départemental de la Grande Corniche, a protected area that stretches along the D2564 from Col d’Èze to La Turbie.

VI.History

The village owes its name to an ancient Egyptian goddess, Isis. It is in her name that the ancient Phoenicians who colonized these lands consecrated their temple. Isis is one of the greatest goddesses of the Antiquity, an Egyptian ideal of femininity and motherhood. She was a patron of all slaves and oppressed, but also listened to the prayers of the rich, the aristocrats and the rulers.

The village is first mentioned in the 4th century records as “ab Avisione”. Over centuries its name took different forms of Esa, Eza, Isia, Isie. Once the territory passed under the control of the House of Savoy in 1388, it acquired its modern name in the Provençal translation.

Eze was first made into an actual habitable town during the 12 century B.C. In 1388, it used to be ruled by the Savoias (Italian Royal Family); however, few years later, the French took over control. During the medieval ages Eze was completely destroyed and rebuilt: indeed, ‘the Eze’ that we see today, was actually rebuilt in the medieval times by the French, so it’s not the original one created in the 1100.

Man first set foot on the territory of modern Eze in the 19-20th centuries B.C. In later times, this land was owned by the Romans and the Moors. It is believed that the town was mainly built under the reign of the Roman emperors Augustus and Flavius.

By 1383, Eze was controlled by the Savoy dynasty that secured the town with new fortifications. This precaution was justified by the proximity to the large city of Nice. At various instances, the power of the House of Savoy extended to other territories, including the city of Vaud. During the next few centuries, Eze repeatedly lived through a few disturbances. In the mid 16th century it changed ownership, passing from the French to the Turks. In 1706, Louis XIV completely destroyed its fortress walls during the War for the Spanish heritage. Only in 1860 Eze officially became part of France by a unanimous decision of its inhabitants.

As of today, the commune holds about 3.000 inhabitants. Although small, Eze has its own newspaper “Vuesd’Eze”. It also holds cultural events, festivals, various religious holidays and the Harmony Festival.
