Outokumpu is a town and municipality of Finland located in the North Karelia region. The municipality has a population of 6,601 (31 July 2020) and covers an area of 584.05 square kilometres (225.50 sq mi) of which 138.22 km2 (53.37 sq mi) is water. The population density is 14.81 inhabitants per square kilometre (38.4/sq mi). Neighbouring municipalities are Heinävesi, Kaavi, Liperi, Polvijärvi and Tuusniemi. The municipality is unilingually Finnish.

The villages located within Outokumpu are: Alavi (Alavi-Suvisranta-Herneaho), Harmaasalo, Kuusjärvi, Paloranta, Rikkaranta-Lähtevä-Kuminvaara, Sysmä-Sätös, Törisevä, Viuruniemi.

At the end of 2017, Outokumpu had 7,003 inhabitants, of whom 4,691 lived in urban areas, 2,224 in sparsely populated areas and the coordinates of the place of residence of 88 inhabitants were unknown. Outokumpu is one of Finland's most industrialized municipalities, when the total number of industrial jobs is proportional to the municipality's population. At the end of 2016, the number of industrial jobs at Outokumpu was 934.

The steel manufacturer Outokumpu originates from the town of Outokumpu. Outokumpu Copper Mine was a big employer in Outokumpu from the beginning of 20th century until 1989 when the ore was shut down.

In Outokumpu there is a rather vibrant industrial park, which was founded in 1979 when it became apparent that the mine was to be shut down during the next decade. Most of the town's biggest employers are situated in Outokumpu Industrial Park as it has the role of organizing and developing the local businesses.

Nowadays Outokumpu is home to many technology industry companies such as Outotec Turula workshop, Finelcomp Oy, Okun Hammaspyörä Oy, Okun Koneistuspalvelu Oy and Outokummun Metalli Oy. It is said that in Outokumpu there is one of the highest densities of CNC machines and tools in Finland compared to population. Relevant employers from other branches of the economy include among others: Piippo Oyj, Mondo Minerals, HK Scan Finland.

According to Statistics Finland's 2014 statistics, there were 2,502 jobs in Outokumpu, of which 4.2% in primary production, 42% in processing and 52.9% in services.

Outokumpu's Region Industrial Village Ltd has been an organizer of business operations for more than 40 years, building almost 70,000 m2 of business premises and close relationships with business developers and financiers. The Entrepreneurship Municipality of North Karelia in 2009 and 2013 - is a city of 6,800 inhabitants with about 1,000 industrial jobs. The relatively large share of industrial jobs in all of Outokumpu's jobs makes Outokumpu one of Finland's most industrialized municipalities. The business-friendly region has dozens of AAA-rated successful companies and good mutual sparring, where companies feed each other through natural cooperation.

1. Outokumpu Mine

Today, the Old Mine houses the Outokumpu Mining Museum, whose mission is to record and present Finnish mining activities from the early 1910s to the present day.

A tourist center and museum have been operating in the Outokumpu mine area since 1982. The museum tunnel was excavated in 1985. The new tunnel was excavated from autumn 2013 to spring 2014. The new tunnel has an exhibition about Finnish contemporary mining and an underground stone exhibition.

2. Outokumpu Wilderness and Nature Center

Outokumpu Wilderness and Nature Center is a versatile nature site near the center of Outokumpu. The area has nature trails, a unique 12-lake kayaking trail and the Black and White recreational fishing area. There are fireplaces in the area, three sheds (Mustantammi, Paloniemi and Ravinkaita), an unobstructed Salmi kitchen canopy and two huts (Pieni and Iso Karhunpesä).

The area of the wilderness and nature center is characterized by narrow, high ridges. Along the ridges, around the lakes, there are 3-7 km of nature trails. Hikers and tourists have christened the area the "little red ridge". The area has been shaped by the Ice Age and has been found to be inhabited during the Stone Age.

Services in the area are provided by Kaunisniemi Café and Särkiselä Camping. The city rents the Kolmikanta camp center, the camp center is well suited for group accommodation.

3. Mukulatu’s Children’s Museum

Outokumpu acted during 1913-1989, Outokumpu's mine. Today, the mining area is a museum. The mining hump is visible as a hill that clearly stands out from the surroundings, with a wide view from above. The old mining tower also remains as a landmark in the city center. In 1971–1985, the Vuonos mine also operated in the municipality.

The rural area, originally known as Kuusjärvi, was transformed into Outokumpu's city in 1968, which in 1977 became a city. Mining had a strong impact on the municipality's identity. The spruce heel used on the coat of arms affixed on April 18, 1953, referred to the original name of the municipality and the copper symbol for the mine. The coat of arms was designed by herald Olof Eriksson. The coat of arms was taken as an unaltered Outokumpu coat of arms. With becoming a merchant, the mine mound gave its name to the entire municipality.

Esko-Pekka Tiitinen, a cultural multi-actor from Outokumpu, has written a novel about Outokumpu's history in the arms of Kivi (January, 2011), which follows the birth and later stages of a mining village through the imaginary Vänskä family. The history of the mine is also told in the book Mining History by Arto Hakola from Outokumpu.

Outokumpu Church, made of plastered brick and designed by Bertel Liljeqvist and Samuel Salvesen, was completed in 1955. County architect Ferdinand Öhman designed the parish's first Kuusjärvi church, which was built in 1878. The Outokumpu Orthodox Church, located in the Partalanmäki district and consecrated in 1954, was designed by master builder Uuno Korhonen.

Well-known cultural figures from Outokumpu include writer and director Esko-Pekka Tiitinen, dancer Jyrki Haapala and musician Anna Puu. Outokumpu also includes actors Jari Pehkonen, film director Taneli Mustonen, author Leena Lehtolainen, author Terhi Rannela, news anchor and author Matti Rönkä, and sports journalist and producer Marko Terva-aho. Esko Kovero, who plays Ismo Laitela in Secret Lives, is from Outokumpu, as is football player Timo Tahvanainen.

Outokumpu has been depicted in Leena Lehtolainen's novels, whose hero criminal police officer Maria Kallio originally came from the imaginary "Arpikylä mining town in Eastern Finland".

Outokumpu offers a wide range of secondary education in the field of culture in Riveria's Outokumpu unit, which also has e.g. Finland's only secondary education in the gaming industry.

Outokumpu's traditional cultural events include Outopia Day and Kumpu Play in the summer, as well as the multi-art Mining Festival at the beginning of September. The major event of Outokumpu's summer season is the Okufest City Festival, which was held for the first time in 2015. In the summer of 2019, Okufest's main performer was DJ Oku Luukkaine, who has studied and lived in Outokumpu.

In 2006–2011, Outokumpu hosted the Kevadkumpu cultural festival in the spring. The program included film, dance, visual arts and seminars. The event began with a presentation of the work of vocational students in the field of culture. It managed to expand into a nationwide event in various fields of art, which also had international fame. Outokumpu has also previously hosted the interdisciplinary Aika Outo Aika cultural festivals and the Artpora art exhibition during the summer at the Old Mine.

Deepest hole in Finland:

Between 2004 and 2005, a hole was drilled in Outokumpu to a depth of 2,516 meters. The diameter of the hole is 22 cm. The hole for research use was drilled by the Russian state-owned company Nedra, which did the work as a government debt to Finland. It is used for geological and geophysical surveys. The exploration hole drilled in Espoo in 2018 passed Outokumpu's hole in depth.

Failed Municipal Merger:

In November 2006, Outokumpu and Liperi announced that they planned to conduct a study on the municipal association. On November 27, 2006, Outokumpu's City Council unanimously decided to conduct a settlement study and approved the municipal association agreement on June 18, 2007. No decision was taken on a possible referendum. The schedule was also open; the merger could have taken place between 2008 and 2011. The municipalities already had a joint director of social affairs and health. In total, the municipalities have about 18,700 inhabitants. However, the municipal government of Liperi rejected the merger agreement in June 2007.

In autumn 2012, Outokumpu and Joensuu decided to start a municipal association study, even though the municipalities do not have a common land border. In January 2014, Outokumpu's City Council decided not to approve the alliance.
